ADVENTURE TOURISM LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The Adventure Tourism Leadership Program (ATLEP) is the most comprehensive outdoor guiding certification program in Canada. This 70-day course is designed for anyone looking to pursue a career in the outdoor industry or simply to expand their competencies on the water and in the mountains. This program provides the opportunity to gain the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and certifications necessary to become outdoor guides. Unlike most traditional university and college programs, the majority of time will be spent in the field receiving formal training and leadership practice. Each component of the program is delivered by highly qualified instructors with decades of experience in the outdoor industry.

While the certification component of the program is focused heavily on canoeing, the program is well-rounded to provide skills and experience in many other outdoor disciplines.  Additional areas that are covered include:  top-rope and lead climbing, rappelling, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, wilderness living and survival, interpretation and wilderness travel.

Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to participate as an assistant guide on an outdoor educational trip with high school students. This component of the program provides valuable leadership/guiding experience, as well as mentorship by seasoned guides.

Successful graduates of the program will be certified lake and moving water canoe instructors; and qualified, competent outdoor leaders. The program provides certifications and skills directly applicable to employment in any camp, or outdoor adventure centre across Canada and internationally.  Past graduates from the program have obtained work around the world teaching outdoor education programs, guiding canoe or rafting expeditions or managing adventure tourism companies in places as varied as the Canadian Rockies, the Arctic, the whitewater mecca of Ontario and Quebec, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Europe and Africa. Many former students end up working with HeLa Ventures for many years after graduating.
